UPDATE: Bicyclist dies in collision with light-rail train in Folsom

A bicyclist died this afternoon when he was struck by a Regional Transit light-rail train in Folsom.

Folsom police spokesman Sgt. Jason Browning said the light-rail train had just left the station at Glenn Drive and Folsom Boulevard about 3:30 p.m., headed for Sacramento. As it crossed Parkshore Drive at Folsom Boulevard, a bicyclist rode into its path and collided with the front of the train.

Browning said a preliminary investigation indicates the bicyclist, a male adult, was westbound on the the south side of Parkshore, riding on the wrong side of the road, against traffic. He said the man apparently ignored the crossing arms and bells warning of the approaching train and continued onto the tracks.

The man has not been identified pending notification of family.

Browning said bus transportation was provided for passengers aboard the train, and buses are being used this evening to transport light-rail passengers between the Iron Point Road light-rail station and Folsom's historic district.

Light-rail officials are continuing their investigation at the scene, but Browning said the intersection is open to vehicle traffic.
