Afternoon fire damages two homes in Rancho Cordova

Two Rancho Cordova homes were damaged this afternoon in a fire thought to have started between the houses.

Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews responded about 4:30 p.m. to reports of black smoke and fire coming from a house on Azalea Garden Way, south of Douglas Road and east of Sunrise Boulevard. The person reporting the fire didn't know whether anyone was inside, according to a Fire Department news release.

The first firefighters to arrive searched the houses for occupants and began working to extinguish the fires. Their efforts were complicated by a compromised gas meter, officials said.

Firefighters were able to confine the fire to the garage of one home and the attic of the other.

Although the cause of the fire has not been determined, officials said it appears to have started between the two structures near some garbage cans.
