Calaveras County officials announced tonight that they have arrested the brother of 8-year-old Leila Fowler in connection with the third-grader's stabbing death April 27.
The boy, age 12, had told authorities that while his parents were not at home, he found his sister stabbed. He identified a tall man with gray, long hair as an intruder.
But tonight, Sheriff Gary Kuntz told reporters that the boy was taken into custody at 5:10 p.m. Saturday at the Valley Springs sheriff's substation, according to a live webcast of the announcement.
After a brief statement, Kuntz declined to take questions from reporters.
The girl's slaying occurred in the Rancho Calaveras neighborhood of Valley Springs, a town of about 7,500 people on the western climb into the mountains, about 60 miles southeast of Sacramento.
