Death of Yolo County inmate reported by sheriff

Yolo County Sheriff's officials say that an inmate died Saturday after being found in his cell with labored breathing.

Todd Alexander Phillips, 29, was pronounced dead at Woodland Memorial Hospital after being taken by ambulance from the main jail. Phillips had been in custody since April 12 for various felony and misdemeanor offenses.

The sheriff's office said in a press release that about 12:45 p.m. Saturday a correctional officer peered into Phillip's cell and noticed the inmate was "agitated and upset." Phillips was in bed and experiencing labored breathing, according to the release.

Officers placed him in restraints for safety reasons and jail medical staff responded to the cell.

Medical personnel outside the jail were notified and Phillips was taken to the hospital. "Efforts to revive Phillips failed and he was pronounced dead at the hospital," according to the press release.

The sheriff's office will investigate the death and the coroner's department will conduct an autopsy.
