Alias James McLaughlin (pictured), 20, was booked into Sacramento County Jail this afternoon on suspicion of murder.
Sacramento police were called to the UC Davis Medical Center about 3:48 p.m. Friday regarding an infant that had been transported to the emergency room. It was reported that the baby was not breathing and had succumbed to injuries, according to a Police Department news release.
Police interviewed family members and the coroner's office responded. On Tuesday, the Sacramento County Coroner's Office determined that the infant died of blunt force trauma to the head.
McLaughlin is accused of being responsible for physical abuse that led to the baby's death.
McLaughlin reportedly was awakened Friday morning by the infant's fussing and crying. Provoked by the infant's behavior, he allegedly picked her up, repeatedly threw her down and shook her.
When the mother attempted to rescue the baby, McLaughlin allegedly assaulted the mother as well, police said.
The baby stopped breathing, and family members called the Sacramento Fire Department. Fire personnel responded and transported that infant to the hospital.
