Authorities have served a search warrant at the site of an apparent marijuana-growing operation -- a home that was destroyed by fire today, Elk Grove Police reported.
Elk Grove Police spokesman Officer Christopher Trim said a woman who drove to the home has been arrested. Authorities plan to search a second location, he said, and more arrests could follow.
The fire was reported shortly after 11:30 a.m., and firefighters from both the Cosumnes Community Services District Fire Department and the Sacramento Fire Department responded.
"As they were putting out the fire, they discovered signs of a marijuana-growing operation," Trim said. "They called us."
The home in the 6000 block of Laguna Villa Way appeared to have been a rental house, Trim said.
"There is marijuana and marijuana-growing equipment inside the home," Trim said, noting that multiple rooms appeared to have been devoted to the operation.
Witnesses in the neighborhood told authorities that a car was seen outside the home from time to time, but it was unknown if anyone occupied the house.
Trim said he did not know how many marijuana-growing operations had been found in the city in recent years. But, he said, "Our detectives certainly have developed an expertise in the field, based on the number (of grow-homes found) since 2006."
