Former Sacramento funeral director sentenced for embezzling

A former Sacramento funeral director has been sentenced in federal court in Sacramento to 15 months in prison for bank fraud related to embezzlement from his former employer.

According to court documents, Trent Mark Davis, 48, of New Iberia, La., was a licensed funeral director at Sacramento Memorial Lawn. He was responsible for meeting with the families of people who had died, arranging funeral services, preparing contracts and collecting payment for services.

Instead of giving the funds to Sacramento Memorial Lawn's general manager for deposit to the company's account, Davis deposited a number of customers' checks into his own account, according to a federal Department of Justice news release. He also embezzled cash payments customers gave him that were intended to pay Sacramento Memorial Lawn for funeral arrangements.

Approximately $118,800 in cash and checks were embezzled from the company, authorities said.

In addition to the prison sentence, U.S. District Judge Morrison C. England Jr. ordered Davis to pay $114,554 in restitution.

The case resulted from a investigation by the FBI and the Sacramento Police Department.
