A motorist who led police on a chase that reached speeds of 90 mph Tuesday in a pursuit that zigzagged across Sacramento was arrested after his car slammed into a pickup truck in the city's midtown.
The chase began before 4 p.m. on the grounds of the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, said UC motorcycle officer Rob Sotelo, who attempted to approach the driver before he fled.
Sotelo described a chase that wound down Stockton Boulevard into south Sacramento to midtown and into east Sacramento on Folsom Boulevard before the unidentified driver hopped onto Highway 50 at 59th Street.
Sotelo said speeds soon reached 90 mph. Sacramento and UC police, and California Highway Patrol joined the chase as the pursuit headed along Highway 50 to 15th Street.
Sotelo said the driver slammed into five or six cars on the 15th Street exit as he tried to elude police. It was unknown if anyone was hurt.
"It was a long pursuit. He had total disregard of life, property - and police," Sotelo said at 22nd and P streets, where the chase ended.
Steve Donnenwirth of Carmichael was driving west on P Street in his Ford pickup when he saw the speeding car heading north on 22nd, followed by Sotelo's motorcycle and the officers who joined the chase.
"I heard sirens and started to slow down, but before I could stop, I hit his right side and spun him. The CHP was right on his tail," Donnenwirth said. "It got my attention."
Donnenwirth was not hurt in the collision.
The collision crumpled the right side of the driver's car at 22nd Street. The driver rammed Sotelo's motorcycle before abandoning the car. But Sotelo tackled the fleeing driver in the middle of 22nd Street as officers converged for the arrest.
