Plane crashes in Tahoe National Forest

A plane crashed this afternoon near Verdi Peak in the Tahoe National Forest, authorities said.

There is no word on the type of aircraft or number of people involved in the crash, said Sgt. Tim Standley of the Sierra County Sheriff's Office.

Multiple agencies, including the sheriff's office, U.S. Forest Service and California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection are responding.

"It's a very remote area out in the middle of the forest," Standley said of the crash site. "The response will be on foot."

Representatives from the National Transportation Safety Board, typically the lead agency in plane crashes, will arrive in about six hours, according to Standley.
