A veteran detective with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department who lives in Yuba City was arrested Friday in Sutter County on possible assault charges, according to reports in the Marysville Appeal-Democrat.

John G. Foster, 50, allegedly ran down a 17-year-old with his minivan in Yuba City after what family members describe as a long-running dispute. According to the newspaper, the minivan is an unmarked vehicle used by the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department.

Sgt. Jason Ramos, sheriff's department spokesman, confirmed that Foster works for the department and has been on unpaid administrative leave since Friday.

"With respect to what he was driving during the incident, that is part of the criminal investigation, so I will defer to the arresting agency on responding to that," Ramos said in an e-mail.
