The two people killed when their single-engine airplane crashed in Placer County over the weekend have been identified as a couple from Lassen County.
Bruce Albright Rhymes, 59, and his wife, Kathy Lorraine Rhymes, 58, died Sunday when their aircraft crashed near Auburn Airport, according to the Placer County Sheriff's Department.
Ian Gregor, public affairs manager for the Federal Aviation Administration, said the Cessna 170 crashed under unknown circumstances in a wooded area.
At 12:30 a.m. Sunday, the sheriff's office received a call from the California Office of Emergency Services to help search for a downed aircraft.
Commercial airliners had confirmed a distress signal from the plane's emergency locating transmitter, the sheriff's office reported.
By providing specific GPS information, the California Highway Patrol's fixed wing aircraft and the Placer County Sheriff's helicopter and a deputy on the ground with a handheld radio were able to process the information to locate the downed plane.
