A Woodland man has been sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole for molesting a 2-year-old boy.
Yolo Superior Court Judge Stephen Mock also sentenced John "Tim" Ganthner, 46, to an additional 11 years and 8 months for physical injuries inflicted on the child in connection with the sexual assault, according to a Yolo County District Attorney's Office news release.
On the morning of Aug. 23, 2011, Ganthner was left alone to watch the child while his grandmother performed volunteer work with a local charity. When the grandmother returned home about 12:30 p.m., she noticed that the child had severe injuries to his private areas and chest. A medical exam determined that the child had been beaten and sexually assaulted, officials said.
Ganthner, who had been the only person with the child, initially denied injuring the youngster. He was arrested the following day.
Ganthner was convicted by a Yolo County jury March 28.
