The Butte County Sheriff's Office reported today that a car stolen from Sacramento was found north of the community of Magalia with three burned bodies inside.
Sheriff's deputies and California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection crews responded about 12:15 a.m. today to Skyway Road near Hupp-Coutelenc Road after receiving a call from an area resident who heard an explosion. They found a green 2000 Acura TL engulfed in flames.
As they extinguished the fire, CalFire personnel found human remains inside the vehicle. Butte County sheriff's detectives and CalFire arson investigators then responded.
Sheriff's Detective Ryan Gsell said the car was reported stolen Tuesday to the Sacramento Police Department. He said two of the bodies were found in the car's trunk and one in the back seat.
Members of the Department of Justice as well as the Sheriff's Office and CalFire arson investigators were continuing the investigation at the scene this afternoon.
Gsell said the gender of the victims and the cause of death have not been determined. Identification will have to be made based on DNA and could take weeks, he said.
