Davis teen pleads not guilty to murder charges

Davis teen Daniel William Marsh pleaded not guilty today in Yolo Superior Court to charges he tortured and killed a Davis couple in April.

Marsh, 16, entered his plea in a hushed voice and largely obscured from a crowded Woodland courtroom.

He faces two counts of first-degree murder with special circumstances including torture and lying in wait in the stabbing deaths of Oliver Northup, 87, and wife Claudia Maupin, 76. Police found the couple April 14 in their Cowell Boulevard home in south Davis after family called for a welfare check.

As a 12-year-old, Marsh was hailed as a hero in 2009 after he navigated his family's station wagon to safety when his father had a heart attack while driving.

Marsh is being tried as an adult and faces life in prison if convicted.

Relatives of Marsh, Northup and Maupin attended the brief hearing, but declined to talk to reporters.
