Gosal convicted of murder in Sikh festival shooting death

A Sacramento Superior Court jury today convicted Gurpreet Singh Gosal of second-degree murder in the Aug. 31, 2008, shooting death of Parmjit Pamma Singh at a Sikh sports festival.

Gosal, 28, is facing a sentence of 35 years to life in prison. Judge Greta Curtis Fall scheduled his sentencing for Aug. 9.

According to testimony at his trial, Gosal fired a handgun right after a friend of his had fatally shot Singh at the festival held at the Bradshaw Temple near Bradshaw and Gerber roads in unincorporated southeast Sacramento. The district attorney's office prosecuted Gosal under an aiding and abetting theory.

The man who witnesses said actually shot Singh, identified as Amandeep Singh Dhami, was able to escape with the assistance of other people at the festival, according to authorities. Dhami is believed to have fled to India.
