Judge sentences lookout in fatal drug robbery to 34 years to life in prison

The lookout in an attempted Meadowview methamphetamine robbery that turned into a fatal, pre-dawn backyard brawl was sentenced today to 34 years to life in prison.

Arsenio Barajas, 24, received the term for his first-degree murder conviction in the Jan. 1, 2011, bludgeon killing of Scott Hanson, 24, in the backyard of a house in the 2100 block of Amanda Way. Barajas also was sentenced for attempted murder in the beating of a second man during the course of the robbery.

Barajas argued he didn't participate in the actual killing of Hanson, but Sacramento Superior Court Judge Ernest W. Sawtelle told him "you got exactly what you deserved" as an aider and abettor.

A second defendant convicted in the case, Joseph Lee Conn, 25, was sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole.

Jurors did not reach a verdict on a third defendant, Jaime Charles Sandoval, 38, who is accused of acting as the driver for the robbery group. Sandoval's retrial has been scheduled for Aug. 27.
