Jury's award stands in damages over 2009 murder

A woman whose boyfriend was convicted of killing his son in her home has lost her motion for a new trial after a civil jury in March awarded the mother of the slain man $400,000.

Sacramento Superior Court Judge David De Alba's June 7 denial of the new trial motion lets the award stand for Mary Lou Villa, whose son, Alexander Villa, 26, was stabbed to death four years ago by his father, Gerardo Valencia "Jerry" Villa, who was convicted of first-degree murder in 2010.

The stabbing took place in the house owned by the mother of Janet Sartain, the latter of whom was Jerry Villa's girlfriend. It was Janet Sartain who was ordered by a civil jury to pay the damage award to Mary Lou Villa in the premises liability case and who filed the motion for the new trial.
