Officials evacuated approximately 10 homes in Orangevale Sunday following an explosion in a man's garage.
At 6:45 p.m., a resident reported that a family member had injured his hands while playing with explosives in their garage on 6433 Trajan Drive, according to Sgt. Jason Ramos of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department. The man was taken to UC Davis Medical Center for treatment.
Ramos said nearby homes were evacuated to "err on the side of caution." Deputies also told residents on adjacent streets to stay indoors, he said.
"We don't know what this guy's intent was," Ramos said.
Sheriff's arson and bomb specialists - as well as the FBI officials - are investigating the scene, Ramos said. He added that FBI involvement is not abnormal, since the bureau's detectives specialize in explosives.
"We (haven't found) anything that is necessarily illegal to possess," Ramos said.
The man appeared to have ties to the military and, according to Ramos, may have experimented with chemicals as a hobby.
Michelle Eidam, spokeswoman for Sacramento Metro Fire, said firefighters initially responded to the dispatch. "There was no fire, so it became a law enforcement incident," she said.
