Police: Incident in Woodland parking lot appears to be suicide

A report of a person in a vehicle with a gun that drew police and an armored SWAT vehicle to a Woodland Costco parking lot this afternoon is believed to have been a suicide, officials said.

Officers responded to the Costco parking lot at 2299 Bronze Star Drive about 1:41 p.m. after receiving a report of an individual in a car with a gun. Upon arrival, officers cordoned off the area and directed surrounding businesses to secure their doors. Because the individual was believed to be in possession of a weapon and was moving around in the car, officers used the SWAT armored vehicle to approach the suspect vehicle.

They discovered that the individual, the sole occupant of the vehicle, had suffered a single gunshot wound to the head. The wound is believed to have been self-inflicted, according to a Police Department news release.

The individual was treated at the scene by fire personnel and transported to the UC Davis Medical Center. where he succumbed to his injuries.

Police said the investigation has been largely turned over the the Sacramento County Coroner's Office.
