Sacramento police say baby left in running car at Taco Bell while mom apparently sleeps it off nearby

A baby was left in a parked vehicle at a Sacramento fast food restaurant not far from where officers said they found the child's passed out, apparently intoxicated mother.

Customers having lunch at the Taco Bell near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Fruitridge Road on Monday saw the vehicle parked with the windows down, engine running and radio on. However, they did not initially notice a baby in the vehicle.

About an hour later, a customer who parked next to the car did notice the child, estimated by police to be about six months old. Caring employees and customers removed the child from the car and police were called.

When officers arrived, they found the child's unconscious mother nearby. She appeared to be intoxicated, according to a police activity log.

The baby, who was unharmed, was transported to the hospital before being taken into custody by Child Protective Services. The mother was also taken to the hospital.

A warrant could be requested for suspicion of child endangerment for the mother, who was not immediately identified.
