A teenager who drowned more than a week ago in the Sacramento River along Sand Cove Park has been identified by the Sacramento County Coroner's office.
Coroner's deputies identified the teen as Johnny Reed, 17, of Sacramento. He had earlier been identified by officials as 16 years old.
His death occurred shortly after noon June 1 near the 2000 block of Garden Highway. Fire officials said numerous eyewitnesses saw the boy swimming with a 13-year-old friend in comparatively deeper water yards from the shoreline.
Witnesses said the older boy suddenly went under the water and never came back up.
Officials searched for the body, but the initial effort was unsuccessful. Reed's body was recovered Wednesday evening from the Sacramento River near the boat launch at Discovery Park.
Sacramento police and Sacramento Fire Department officials were called to the Sacramento River at 5:42 p.m. Wednesday after two kayakers found a body near the shore.
