Three-striker convicted of attempted murder, domestic violence

A three-strike offender has been convicted in a case involving domestic violence.

A Sacramento County jury on Friday convicted Richard Helton, 61, of attempted murder, domestic violence with great bodily injury, and criminal threats. Helton is a three-striker with prior convictions for burglary, sodomy and rape with a weapon, according to a Sacramento County District Attorney's Office news release.

Authorities said Helton threatened to kill the victim before attacking her and choking her until she lost consciousness.

The next morning, the victim was able to call police and was treated at a hospital. Her injuries included a cut at the top of her head, burst blood vessels in the whites of her eyes, bruising around her eyes and lips, swelling and bruising on the side of her face, and burst blood vessels around her neck, authorities said.

Helton is to be sentenced July 15.
