A driver was arrested for attempted murder after he allegedly ran into a bicyclist, got out of his pickup and proceeded to kick the motionless bike rider in the head, according to Sacramento County Sheriff's deputies.
Joseph Paul Leonard, 60, (pictured at left) was booked into Sacramento County Main Jail Thursday for the attack that left the 34-year-old bicyclist in critical condition.
Deputes said the brutal incident began around 7 a.m. Thursday at a fast food restaurant in the area near Howe Avenue and Arden Way. Callers told dispatchers that a fight had occurred between a man later identified as Leonard and two other men in a parking lot.
While en route, deputies learned that someone had been run over. When deputies arrived at the scene, they found Leonard, who was prevented from leaving by a bystander, and the bike rider, who was on the ground suffering from extensive injuries, according to press release.
According to witnesses, Leonard had an altercation with the younger man and another man outside the restaurant. After that ended, the younger man rode away on his bike.
Witnesses told deputies that Leonard drove toward the bicyclist and ran into him, knocking the bike rider to the ground. Leonard then got out of his truck and began to kick the bicyclist in the head, according to witnesses.
A bystander intervened, removing the keys from Leonard's truck and detaining him at the scene. The circumstances surrounding the initial altercation are being investigated, according to a sheriff's department press release.
