Abandoned pressure cooker prompts bomb concern in S. Lake Tahoe

With the Boston Marathon bombings still fresh in their minds, South Lake Tahoe police closed down part of Highway 50 last night when an abandoned pressure cooker was found after a competitive event.

Just before 7 p.m. Sunday, the dispatch center received at call that a pressure cooker was found on the ground at the Lakeview Commons beach, Lakeview Avenue and Highway 50. The call came in just before the end of the Race the Lake of the Sky paddle board event.

Event security staff and police cleared the area and Highway 50 traffic was diverted.

The Tahoe Douglas bomb squad unsuccessfully tried to destroy the cooker with a robot. Eventually, a bomb team member in protective gear destroyed the device with a water cannon.

It was determined that the cookware was an industrial-sized rice cooker with food inside. Traffic was diverted for about two hours.

Federal authorities say two brothers used shrapnel-packed pressure cooker bombs in the Boston bombings.
