A fire that destroyed two storage garages at Elk Grove High School early this morning is being investigated as arson, according to Cosumnes Fire Department officials.
Fire units responded at 2:44 a.m. to a report of a fire near the high school's football stadium. Firefighters arrived to find two approximately 15-by-15-foot garages burning, with fire spreading to a third structure.
The fire started in or around the western-most garage and spread east to the second and later the third garage, according to a Fire Department news release. The fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes.
Two garages were destroyed along with their contents, while the third structure suffered only minor exterior damage. Fire officials said the storage units contained football training supplies, a small tractor and related field-maintenance equipment. No estimate of cost of the damage was available.
Fire officials said the cause of the fire is under investigation and is believed to be a case of arson. Investigators would like to speak with anyone who may have information regarding the fire or people seen in the area around the time of the fire. Anyone with information is asked to call the Arson Tip Line at (916) 405-7118.
