QUESTION: Back in I believe 1989, my best friend Stacie McDonough and another close friend Jodi Del Nero were both killed in a single-car accident on the Levy Road in Sacramento. Whatever happened to the driver of that vehicle? I remember he survived, but was he ever convicted in their deaths?

ANSWER: Lawrence Ervin Potts, then 18, was sentenced in February 1989 to eight years in prison after pleading no contest to two counts of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated in connection with the fatal crash Sept. 3, 1988.
According to stories in The Bee, Potts failed to negotiate a turn on East Levee Road near Sotnip Road in North Sacramento. His car rolled over several times, ejecting passengers Stacie McDonagh, 18, of Rio Linda, and Jodie Marie Del Nerio, 19, of Sacramento.
Potts, whose blood alcohol level was twice that necessary for the legal presumption of intoxication, was also seriously injured in the crash.
