ANSWER: Kenneth Alvin Michel, a man who suffered from hearing and speech impairments as well as other physical and emotional ills, was sentenced to 62 years and four months in prison for the kidnapping of two girls and the attempted kidnapping of a third.
According to stories in The Bee, 4-year-old Candi Talarico was kidnapped June 4, 1988, as she was playing with two other children in an alley behind her apartment at 2500 Q St. She was rescued July 18 from a crawl space at an Elk Grove church, where Michel had kept her for six weeks.
Talarico was found after Michel kidnapped 5-year-old Meuy Han Saefong on July 18 outside her apartment at 3548 Y St. and took her to a vineyard near Galt. After spending about five hours in the vineyard with Michel, Saefong was discovered in a box in the trunk of his car.
Michel had attempted to kidnap another girl, 6-year-old Daisy Jones, the same day, but she escaped from Michel's car by sliding across the seat and jumping out the passenger door.
Michel, now 57 years old, is at the California Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison in Corcoran.
