A bicyclist was badly injured when he collided with a skateboarder on Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe.
Steven Magelssen, 20, of South Lake Tahoe was riding his bicycle southbound on Highway 50 in the center left turn lane approaching a red traffic signal at Heavenly Village Way about 8:30 p.m.
Pablo Bobadilla, 23, of South Lake Tahoe was riding his skateboard while attempting to cross Highway 50 in a marked crosswalk. The traffic signal was directing pedestrians to cross.
South Lake Tahoe police said in a press release that Magelssen failed to stop at the red traffic signal holding westbound traffic and the left turn lane. He collided with Bobadilla in the crosswalk.
Bobadilla suffered cuts and abrasions. Magelssen, who was not wearing a helmet, was knocked unconscious.
He was in and out of consciousness before being transported by ambulance to a hospital. Later, he was air-lifted to a Reno hospital because of the severity of his injury.
Police said that Magelssen was at fault for running the red light and violating the right-of-way of a pedestrian in a crosswalk.
