Firefighters rescued a small dog from an apartment fire this afternoon in Rancho Cordova.
Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District crews were dispatched at 1:22 p.m. for a report of smoke showing from an apartment at 2081 West La Loma Drive. While en route, they were advised that a child might be unaccounted for at that location.
Firefighters arrived to find smoke showing from the doorway of a second-floor apartment and immediately searched the residence to make sure all the occupants were safe.
No people were found inside the apartment, but firefighters found a small dog in the unit and removed it unharmed, according to a district news release.
Officials said the fire was controlled within minutes, and damage was limited primarily to the kitchen area.
Investigators are working to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
