Forest Service reports Kyburz fire 95 percent contained

The U.S. Forest Service reports that the Kyburz fire, burning for three days in the Eldorado National Forest, is 95 percent contained with 615 acres burned.

The fire started at 12:41 p.m. Monday along Highway 50 west of Kyburz and snarled traffic through the Sierra as lanes were closed to accommodate fire equipment and allow crews to clear debris. The California Highway Patrol reported that the fire was caused by a blown tire on a vehicle.

Highway 50 is open to two-way traffic, but motorists are advised to watch for debris on the roadway. Granite Springs and Webber Mill roads remain closed to the public, but the Forest Service reports that all campgrounds are open.

Firefighters today continued to secure a line around the fire perimeter and made good progress mopping up to within 25 feet of control lines, according to a Forest Service news release. Full containment is expected by 6 p.m. Friday.

Officials said fire managers have begun assessing repair needs, including erosion control and restoration of roads and trails damaged during the firefighting effort.
