Forest Service reports Kyburz fire fully contained

The U.S. Forest Service reports that the Kyburz fire, which began Monday afternoon, is fully contained.

The Forest Service also released revised figures on the size of the fire, reporting a total of 572 acres burned.

The fire started at 12:41 p.m. Monday along Highway 50 west of Kyburz and snarled traffic through the Sierra as lanes were closed to accommodate fire equipment and allow crews to clear debris. The California Highway Patrol reported that the fire was caused by a blown tire on a vehicle.

Two outbuildings -- a shed and an outhouse -- were destroyed by the fire, and about 100 people were voluntarily evacuated from a private camp Monday as a precaution. No homes were threatened by the fire, which burned north of the highway in the Eldorado National Forest.

As of 6 p.m. today, the Forest Service reported that 381 personnel were assigned to the fire, down from more than 800 at the height of the firefighting effort.
