Jury convicts gang member in 2010 murder near Encina High

A Sacramento Superior Court jury today convicted Luis Prudente of first-degree murder in the Nov. 27, 2010, shooting death of Jesse Dean Jones.

Jurors this morning said they had not reached a verdict on a second murder count that had been filed on Prudente for the fatal Oct. 23, 2009, hit-and-run killing of Julian Juan Dearcos on El Camino Avenue.

Judge Marjorie Koller sent the jury back into deliberations to continue its discussion on the killing of the 35-year-old Dearcos.

Besides the murder, Prudente, 20, was convicted of assault with a deadly weapon in the shooting of Jones' 15-year-old girlfriend in what authorities described as a gang-related shotgun attack at the corner of Clinton Road and Wittkop way near Encina High School.

The jury sustained two special-circumstance allegations that Prudente, an admitted gang member, shot and killed Jones in a drive-by and that it was gang-related. The special circumstance findings could result in a life in prison term with no chance of parole for Prudente.
