Melee erupts early Saturday outside Old Town Auburn bar

By Dale Kasler

Auburn police said they responded to an overnight melee in Old Town that included gunshots fired in the air and a resident being sent to the hospital after getting punched in the face.

The incident occurred at 1:30 a.m. today outside the California Club Bar in Old Town, police reported.

After responding to reports of gunshots, officers arrived on the scene to find a large crowd quickly dispersing. One man, James Vigil, 26, of Auburn, was taken to Sutter Roseville Medical Center after apparently being punched in the face.

Vigil was listed in fair condition this afternoon.

Police said they found no firearms on the scene, but did find bullet casings. They said they were having trouble piecing together what happened, and the people on the scene weren't being forthcoming with information.
