Two Placer County residents are facing federal charges in connection with an alleged marijuana-trafficking operation using the mails to ship money.
Matthew Luke Gillum of Loomis, identified in court papers as the brains of the outfit, is in custody and will be in court today for a bail hearing.
The government opposes his release.
In addition to drug distribution charges, Gillum is accused in a criminal complaint of unlawful use of the mails and handling his finances so as to avoid currency transaction reporting requirements.
Jolene Chan of Roseville who, according to court papers, has admitted working for Gillum, faces the same set of charges in a related complaint.
She was released Wednesday on a $50,000 unsecured bond, and a preliminary examination is set for Aug. 8.
