American fire reported 92 percent contained, mop-up under way

Firefighters today moved toward closing lines around the American fire in Placer County.

The fire, burning since Aug. 10 northeast of Foresthill, was reported 92 percent contained Tuesday evening with 25,520 acres burned. Full containment is expected on Thursday.

The number of personnel involved in the firefighting effort now stands at 1,082. One firefighter reportedly suffered a burned hand, and was treated and released, according to the online fire update by the U.S. Forest Service.

Officials reported that the southern portion of the fire area is cold, while ground on the western flank continues to hold considerable heat where hand crews and engines were conducting mop-up activities. Scattered smoldering pockets were reported in the northern section. Active fire was reported along the southwestern flank in timber and brush.
