ANSWER: The 1995 slaying of John Heringer in the driveway outside his Foothill Farms townhouse remains unsolved.

Heringer, 38, owned and operated a jewelry store and jewelry repair business in downtown Sacramento, and also had several contracts with larger stores in the Sacramento area.

According to stories in The Bee, sheriff's deputies responded to O'Sullivan Way, a private street off McCloud Drive, about 12:30 a.m. Oct. 20 after receiving reports of shots fired. Witnesses reported hearing at least five shots. They also told investigators that they saw a tall, thin man run from the scene after they heard the shots.

Heringer, who was returning home after having dinner with friends, was shot three times in the back. He was found lying in a dark area near his parked pickup truck.

The killer reportedly stole Heringer's briefcase, which contained little of value other than his checkbook.
