Sacramento police spokesman Officer Doug Morse said the man, a pedestrian, was struck about 9:15 a.m. as the train was northbound just south of Q Street near 19th Street. Morse said he did not know whether the man was on or next to the tracks when he was hit.
The man's name and age have not been released pending notification of family. Morse said investigation of the death has been turned over to the Sacramento County Coroner's Office.
The man was struck in an area with a gravel pathway, but no pavement, along the railroad tracks.
The train remained stopped during the police investigation, backing up traffic south to Broadway, until about 11 a.m.
