A Novato man drowned at Jenkinson Reservoir on Saturday afternoon, authorities announced today.
The man, identified as 34-year-old Ramiro Nunez Magana, was swimming with family members near the Pinecone campground about 1:45 p.m. Saturday when he began to struggle. Before anyone could reach him, the man disappeared from sight in the waters of the reservoir, also known as Sly Park Lake, according to a news release from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office.
Responders could not immediately locate the victim. About 3:15 p.m., the man's body was located about 30 feet from the shoreline. He was pulled from the lake and pronounced dead.
Among the units that responded were sheriff's department, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, El Dorado County fire, U.S. Forest Service, the El Dorado Irrigation District Lake Patrol and park rangers.
Sheriff's authorities remind residents and visitors that swimming in the county's lakes and rivers is "inherently dangerous," and recommend that life jackets are used when swimming in deep or swift water.
