John Montanez (pictured) was taken into custody Wednesday, according to a Sacramento Police Department news release.
Police responded at 3:21 p.m. July 31 to report of shots fired. They learned that a male armed with a handgun and in the company of a second individual began firing at two other males. Investigators later determined that there were three victims among the group allegedly fired upon by Montanez. No one was injured.
Police said they do not know the motive for the shooting, but a disagreement between the two groups had occurred just before the shooting.
The victims and suspects fled the immediate area after the shooting, delaying the investigation, police said.
An officer contracted to patrol the mall was in the area and immediately began coordinating with security to find the suspects and any possible victims. Based on leads, Montanez was identified the day of the incident as the shooting suspect, police said.
The investigation is continuing.
