Elk Grove police plan to assign extra officers on Saturday to look out for traffic violations by motorcyclists.
The special enforcement is an effort to cut down on deaths and injuries from motorcycle crashes. Last year, Elk Grove police investigated 24 motorcycle-involved injury crashes.
Five of the crashes involved motorcyclists who were driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, according to a police department press release.
State crash data indicates that the primary causes of motorcycle crashes are speeding, unsafe turning and driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
The police department also asks drivers of other types of vehicles to watch out for motorcyclists, especially when turning or changing lanes.
