A patron walked into the USA gas station at 2470 Lake Tahoe Blvd. about 10:50 p.m. and found the male clerk lying on the floor with blood around him, according to a Police Department news release. The patron called 911 and said the clerk needed immediate help.
Officers arrived within a minute of the call and found the clerk without a pulse. They administered CPR until fire personnel and medics arrived. The victim did not respond to the CPR and was declared dead at the scene.
The clerk's name has not been released pending notification of family.
Investigating officers reported that it appeared the victim had been shot, and a review of surveillance video confirmed this. Police said the video showed a thin man (pictured), about 5 feet 8 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall entering the store through the front door. The man was wearing dark clothing, including a black hooded sweatshirt and dark mask over his face.
During a brief encounter with the clerk, the man raised a handgun and shot the clerk. Police said the clerk fell to the floor as the gunman fled.
No vehicle description was available. Police said they were unable to determine the suspect's race from the video, although he appeared to have light skin tone. His age was estimated to be in the 20s to 40s range.
Police said investigators are processing evidence, questioning witnesses and working with other law enforcement agencies to solve the homicide. They ask anyone with information pertaining to the case to call the Police Department at (530) 542-6100, or Secret Witness at (530) 541-6800.
