Woman accused of giving baby fatal dose of prescription medications appears before judge

The woman accused of giving her 8-month-old baby a fatal dose of prescription medications appeared before a judge today to be arraigned on murder and child endangerment charges.

Sarah Stephens, 32, was charged with murder and two felony counts of child endangerment in connection with the death of her son last fall. Stephens didn't enter a plea and is scheduled to appear in court again later this month.

Citrus Heights police did not immediately see signs of foul play upon responding to the call of an unresponsive child, according to authorities. But toxicology reports later indicated the baby had died of a prescription drug overdose, police said.

Her privately retained attorney, Michael Sganga, has not returned a phone call for comment.
