The arraignment for Donald Black (pictured), a 23-year veteran with the department, is scheduled for at 9 a.m. Nov. 4.
Nevada County authorities arrested Black, 43, while on duty on Tuesday. He was booked into Nevada County Jail on suspicion of five counts of lewd and lascivious acts with a child 14 or 15 years old.
Black, who has since been released on bail, lives in Grass Valley.
Nevada County Sheriff Keith Royal, a former member of the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department, said he once worked with Black.
"He worked with me when I was a sergeant with Sacramento County," said Royal. "He got the job done. Fast forward to what has transpired now, it is very disappointing."
Royal confirmed that the minor Black is suspected of molesting is now an adult man.
Royal lamented the recent turn of events surrounding Black, who has a history of professional misconduct within the Sacramento Sheriff's Department.
"I would have had higher expectations of him because of how he was early in his career," said Royal. "Secondly, this gives a black eye to all of law enforcement. We are held to a higher standard and given the public's trust."
Also, there is sometimes a public perception that law enforcement will protect their own. To the contrary, Royal said.
"We want to make sure we do a thorough job because we don't want to lose that trust," said Royal.
