Aquelin Talamantes, the Davis woman accused in the death of her 5-year-old daughter in Sacramento last week, pleaded not guilty to murder Monday at her arraignment in Yolo Superior Court.
Talamantes, 29, is being held without bail in Yolo County Jail in Woodland, days after authorities said she drove from her Glide Drive home in Davis to a relative's home on Sacramento's Pocket Road last Wednesday with her unresponsive daughter in the trunk of her car. The girl later died at an area hospital.
On Monday, tearful family members sobbed as Talamantes was led in her green-and-white jail uniform into the courtroom for the brief arraignment and again as they filed out of the courtroom, saying, "We love you, Aquelin. We still love you."
Talamantes is scheduled to return Oct. 15 to Yolo Superior Court.
Sacramento police said officers were called by family members to Pocket Road after Talamantes arrived without her daughter. Soon officers discovered the daughter in the car's trunk and with neighbors tried to revive the girl, police said.
Davis police and Yolo County prosecutors took over the case after investigators determined the circumstances that led to the girl's death began at Talamantes' Glide Drive home, Sacramento police said.
