Police are investigating the circumstances of a 5-year-old girl's death after the child was found barely alive in the trunk of a parked car Thursday in Sacramento's Pocket area.
The girl's mother, Aquelin Talamantes, 29, was arrested on suspicion of homicide in connection with the case.
The episode began as a welfare check sought by concerned family members, according to police spokesman Doug Morse. When authorities arrived at 4:30 p.m. at the Shore Park Apartments in the 7900 block of Pocket Road, they found family members near a black sedan in the parking lot of the apartment complex. Officers found the girl, still alive, inside the trunk.
"The child was in need of immediate emergency medical assistance, and CPR was started," Morse said.
The girl, whose name is being withheld, died later at an area hospital, Morse said. The coroner has not released a cause of death.
There was no immediate word on how long the girl had been in the trunk. Detectives marked the crime scene and placed evidence into large brown bags. A child's black car seat was rested a few feet from the car.
During the initial investigation, police determined that the incident began at the Talamantes home in the 5100 block of Glide Drive in Davis. Both the Davis and Sacramento police departments shifted their attention to the Glide Drive address, seeking a search warrant to look for evidence, according to a press release.
Talamantes was to be booked into Yolo County Jail.
Neighbors in the Pocket area said they were in shock.
"This is a pretty quiet neighborhood," said Angela Lake, who lives in an apartment not far from the site of the discovery.
Lake said she noticed two hysterical women near the car talking loudly about 2:30 p.m., when she left to pick up her daughter from school. When she returned about 45 minutes later, Lake said, police were already searching the scene for clues.
