An Elk Grove neighborhood was rattled early Friday morning when police said a man fired a shot into the air to stop the repossession of his car.
Elk Grove police were called at about 3 a.m. to the 9200 block of Maple View Way, near Laguna Boulevard and Bruceville Road, where a man with a tow truck was trying to repossess a 2013 Nissan Altima.
Elk Grove police officer Chris Trim said the owner of the car exited the residence and discharged a handgun into the air. The tow truck driver then drove away.
Trim said that when officers arrived, the car that was to be repossessed was not at the home, leading police to believe it was driven away and hidden.
Police established phone contact with the man who fired the gun, who was back inside the home with a teen girl and a woman were also live there. They were not being held hostage.
About 6 a.m., the man came out of the home and he detained by police. Officers conducted an initial sweep of the home, and they plan to use a search warrant for a more comprehensive look inside.
Five to 10 homes were evacuated for safety, but residents have been allowed to re-enter their residences.
Trim said the man who fired the gun could be arrested on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm.
