Three convicted of murder in 2012 Elverta killing

A Sacramento Superior Court jury today convicted three defendants of first-degree murder in the shooting death last year of a man in Elverta.

Facing life terms in prison with no chance of parole in the case are Andrew Wilbur Jeffries, Wendy Fong and Robert Haven, all of whom are 34. They all were accused in the March 28, 2012, killing of Anthony Ortega, 33, with the special-circumstance allegation of lying in wait.

According to the prosecution's trial brief, Jeffries was angry at Ortega for having an affair with a girlfriend of the defendant. Jeffries then got Haven to help him lure Ortega to his death in the 1700 block of Kasser Road where they said the three of them were going to steal a car. Fong, a new girlfriend of Jeffries, helped plan the killing and allowed Haven and Jeffries to use her car, the brief said.

Judge Helena R. Gweon scheduled the sentencing for Oct. 11.
