Two men pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and other charges today in the stabbing death of a Gold River man two years ago near an American River homeless camp.
Dawayne Jerrold Lawrence, 37, and Frank Paul Haney, 54, entered their pleas in front of Sacramento Superior Court Judge Michael P. Kenny in the May 31, 2011, robbery slaying of Adam Michael Steinbach, 27.
According to court documents, Lawrence and Haney lived in a homeless camp near Northgate and Del Paso boulevards. Witnesses said Steinbach apparently owed Haney money for methamphetamine and that Haney solicited Lawrence to rob Steinbach.
Authorities said that when Steinbach resisted, Lawrence stabbed him to death.
Lawrence, who pleaded guilty to a total of eight felonies, agreed to be sentenced to 69 years and eight months in prison. Haney, who agreed to testify against Lawrence, will be sentenced to 12 years, according to the terms of his plea bargain.
