Bicyclist killed in collision with SUV in Carmichael

A bicyclist was struck and killed by a sport utility vehicle Thursday night in Carmichael, police said.

The incident occurred at 8:05 p.m. on El Camino Avenue, near Laurence Avenue. The cyclist, a male in his 20s, was traveling in the wrong direction on El Camino Avenue when he was hit by an oncoming SUV, said Officer Lizz Dutton, California Highway Patrol spokeswoman.

"The cyclist was on the same road, but he was facing traffic. The rider didn't have a headlight and wasn't wearing a helmet," Dutton said.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene. Authorities are still interviewing the driver of the SUV to see if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision, Dutton said.
