Ben Roethlisberger has given money to the Sacramento Police Department for the purchase and training of a new police dog, according to the NFL player's foundation website.
The grant to the Sacramento department mirrors other donations the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation has made to police and fire department canine units in cities near where the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback plays away games. Last Sunday the Steelers played the Raiders in Oakland.
The foundation said that Sacramento will use the grant to purchase and train Rex, a 17-month-old Belgian Malinois. Rex will be teamed with Officer Aaron Thompson.
"We are extremely appreciative that the Ben Roethlisberger Foundation chose to honor our K-9 Unit with a grant toward the purchase and training of the newest member of our department, K-9 Rex," said Sacramento Police Sgt. Steve Oliveira.
The foundation invited police and fire departments across the country to submit grant requests.
It is the seventh season that Roehlisberger's foundation has bestowed grants to police and fire departments to acquire and train dogs. The foundation distributed $135,000 in grants around the country last season to canine units.
